GO AWAY BOOBOO's endearing illustrations and colorful text will amuse and delight every child, already eager and willing to forget all that ails. In this very original and beautifully illustrated tale, Booboo, a personification of a bruise, takes on a life of his own and is off to play with monkeys, and cows, and moons, and stars. He even walks on Mars, only to be completely forgotten about in the end. Ultimately, all the child remembers is the comfort of her mother's arms.
"With Their Tiny Hands" is an experience to be enjoyed by those big and tiny alike. It explores the idea that every accomplishment, no matter how large or small, reflects our personal strength, determination, and the attitude with which we choose to live our daily lives. Sometimes all we need is a little push with tiny hands!
A collection of poems ranging from free verse, to rhyme, to anecdote, exploring concepts of love, of strength and will, determination and sensuality; these, as if extracted from each moment to be noticed, appreciated. Here, memories are owned, challenges surrounded, and beauty extracted from the seemingly unpleasant. Even a visit to the gallows becomes sensual, empowering, claimed, reinterpreted. "Dreams on Me" evokes a whirlwind of emotions and thoughts. It is a rollercoaster ride of words, to be savoured.

My name is John Haines ( my real name, that is. )I am a 46 year old mild-mannered civil servant - by day. At night, I don the smoking jacket and become self-published author Josh Rogan. If you are after some light reading, a few laughs with liberal doses of insanity, well, you've come to the right place. Although I have written one full-length novel, I think my 'bag' as it were, is more in the short story department. I have three short stories on here, with many, many more in the pipeline. I also write light hearted verse and I give the odd stirring poem of chivalry and adventure a run out. I also re-publish under my own name, out of copyright classics, and I also dabble a little in music, with a few bits and bobs here on Lulu ( all free, by the way. )So now you know what the Haines/Rogan caper is all about. And finally, on behalf of Liverpool entertainer and folk historian, Gerry Jones, I have for sale here on Lulu, his album of Liverpool folk songs 'Liverpool Lyrics'.Please do load the free preview for a listen. Unusually for these songs, Gerry plays keyboards, which give the songs a bit of a lift and a lilt. And of course, once Gerry's dulcet tones have eased your troubled mind, please do take a look at my works, most of which have generous previews. As for family life, I am married with two teenage children, and that's it. Oh,and hello to anyone who knows me, as they say on the radio. PS Please do check out my work under my pen name, Josh Rogan, there is an overlap but some are under one and not the other. John Haines .

Her Benny by Silas K Hocking
This book is a little gem, and is just out of copyright this year. It was first published in 1880 by a Cornish Minister who upped sticks to bang his drum up in the 'grim North', ( including 3 years in Liverpool, which is where this story is primarily set ). Despite the good man of the cloth earning only a fraction of what he should have done, this book gave Silas K Hocking his place in History, as the first author to sell more than a million books in his own life time. Considering the traditional rush from the cemetery to buy all sorts of works of art, music and literature by even the most obscure writers/artists in the event of their passing on, this was indeed an achievement. One read of the first chapter will make you understand why.
The Happy Harold Stories
This is a compendium of all five of the Happy Harold stories available separately here on Lulu. It's difficult to market short stories on their own, so this collection is far better value. For those who have not read any of the previews, Harold Spencer is a ten year old boy who brings chaos and confusion to the good residents of the Village of Plumley in Wiltshire, sometimes even further afield. Enjoy. Josh Rogan
The Ballad of Old Windrush Cave
This is my long-ish poem in book form, about two people in 18th Century Devon, England, who defy all odds, and many people, to be with each other. As well as being sold separately here,it will shortly be available as part of a four-story collection. As ever, Enjoy, John. ( Writing once again as Josh Rogan )Update Oct 25/05. As single poems are difficult to sell, I've decided to make both the Download and the preview the entire poem, so, if you wish to bag it for nowt, great. If you do, then please, if you can, leave a review. Thanks.
The Old Man's Trousers
Ken Roley is a driver for a laundry and cleaning company. After an unfortunate road accident, he finds himself thrown together with the other two drivers involved in the collision, and very soon ends up on a comical wild goose chase around the Wiltshire countryside, in pursuit of the most unlikely secret agent in existence. Join Ken and his two new friends, as they try to capture 'The Old Man's Trousers'.
Backwater Blues
In the rain-lashed village of Ogdenborough, in the North of England, nothing much ever happens. But one year something does happen. Read the amusing story of a young boy and his two friends whose efforts to spice up the Annual Gala, unwittingly results in something happening which creates a buzz over the whole of the County of Cumbria. What Gerald Frazzell and his two friends, Harry 'Hapless' Hawkins and Agnes Niblock, did that day, ensured the residents of this tiny, forgotten backwater, would never, ever, forget such an event, or pay for it!! Read on!! Josh Rogan 2005
The Marble
Little Joey Thomas was a keen marble player from the former Mill Town of Burnley, in the North of England, famed for steep streets and oldy worldy settings for TV adverts. But Joey's luck had been down and his marble collection was reduced to just one, his 'Kingy', a giant speckly blue and green marble, his pride and joy. Or it was his pride and joy, as one day after a spectacular mis-hit, the marble bounced off a lamp-post, flew through the air, landed in the gutter, rolled down the steep street, and plopped straight down a grid. Let us leave Joey as he slopes off home with his shoulders bowed, and follow the giant marble on its strange adventures around the world. Enjoy. Josh Rogan
Happy Harold goes on Holiday
It's holiday time for the Spencers. Harold, however, does not take a holiday from the usual chaos and mayhem that he unwittingly causes most everyday. Instead, he packs it into his suitcase and takes it with him to post-war Rhyl for a week's chaos, er, holiday, at Whitmore's Holiday Camp.
Happy Harold Goes on the Wagon
On the hottest day of the year, Harold Spencer goes off to join his friends to have a picnic. But on the way he meets a little old lady with grey hair in a bun, and glasses on a chain, who becomes very concerned that Harold seems to have taken to the drink, namely, a bottle of brown ale, but is there really beer in it?
Happy Harold and the Marsh Lizards
In this next instalment, Harold goes fishing and almost gets more than he bargained for, and then decides to come to the aid of the impoverished 'other fellas' and their families of post-war Wiltshire, but the results do not quite go to plan.
Happy Harold and the Great Give-Away
'Happy' Harold Spencer leaves school one afternoon, with the notion that all sand is 'free to all', and in the true traditions of Murphy's Law, Harold and his friends soon find themselves on a building site, with ten tons of sand waiting, presumably,to be used by one and all.
Happy Harold and his Friends
Harold Spencer lived life on the outside lane – but seeing as the only road Harold had access to was a narrow country lane which once went fifteen months without having a motorised vehicle drive along it, maybe this wasn’t much to boast about. But Harold Spencer was a rebel – proud, fierce, and independent. This meant he did not listen in class, liked a fight with his arch-enemy, Lionel ‘Ripper’ Bullstock, and was quite happy to roam for miles on his own; but only when his friends were either confined to their rooms for one or more juvenile transgressions, or were ill. But Harold Spencer was an unusual kind of rebel – he was a rebel that made sure he was home each night in time for his tea. Harold Spencer was only ten years old.
The Pied Piper of Hamelin
This is a reprint of the famous poem 'The Pied Piper of Hamelin' in illustrated book form, scanned from a Victorian edition. One look at the illustrations will make you realise why such preservation is vital, they are stunning. As you can see by the copyright notice, this is a joint effort between my cousin, his grand-daughter, and yours truly. A real family affair but spread over 15,000 miles! The book has passed through several hands over the years, with the earliest recorded owner ( in 1892 ), being Margaret Pilkington, a member of the Pilkington Glass family of St. Helen's, important names in their time here in the UK. It last changed hands in 1942, when it came into the posession of a lady who would become my cousin by marriage. Please do take a look, and as ever, enjoy. John Haines
Diary of a Nobody
If you like light humour, you will love this. This is a re-print of the Grossmith brothers' 'Diary of a Nobody', first published in 1892. It is a tale of a heavily put-upon, and not overly wealthy, Lower-Middle Class Victorian family man. He has a son who at first seems, well, is useless. He has acquaintances constantly calling in at the most inconventient of times ( conveniently called Cumming and Gowing! ), and has a freftul time over various tradesman and their work. This is all brought to the reader via a daily diary. Enjoy.
Alice's Adventures in Wonderland/Through the Looking Glass and what Alice found there
The next in my series of Victorian reprints. This one is of the two best known works from Lewis Carroll ( although he was also a brilliant Mathematician ), with illustrations by Sir Sidney Tenniel. What has always interested me about these stories, is not so much the characters and their inherent madness, but Carroll's seeming exercise in exaggerated and often mis-placed emphasis. The books are also 'other realities' in the writers mind, or at least opposite perspectives, with chess and mirror images as the recurrent themes. Madness? In the writing, yes, delightfully so; but not the writer who gave us these marvellous stories. Also, its a chance to de-Disnify your mind, as their albeit excellent film combined and omitted much from both of the books, which many people do not realise. But as the Carroll scholars admit, no Disney, no Carroll, maybe. As usual, enjoy. John Haines
The Hound of the Baskervilles
I am pleased to be able to present a reprint of my favourite Conan Doyle story, 'The Hound of the Baskervilles'. Although Sir Arthur Conan Doyle published this in 1901, he set this and his other Holmes stories in an era, almost, but not quite over. His inspiration was nearer to home than perhaps we appreciate. Firstly, he lived through the late Victorian era, but even in 1901, things urban and things rural were much the same. 'I'll show you a shilling' and 'Gawd Bless Ya, Guvnor' was still commonplace among toffs and cabbies coming together, as were rambling country estates where the chief resident always seemed to be somewhere else, India, Canada or anywhere with grateful subjects and pith helmet attired adventurers. One such fellow comes home to claim the title and estate of Baskerville Hall, with a dreaded mythical hound waiting to pounce. Read on!
Beowulf
This is a reprint of the 8th Century classic, which tells the story of a young Geatish warrior, Beowulf, who comes to the aid of the Danish King Hrothgar, whose realm has been terrorised by a demon named Grendel. After slaying the demon, there follows fifty years of glory for Beowulf, until a new danger rears its ugly head, in the form of the most ubiquitous terrors of classic epics, a dragon. Sadly, the identity of the author has been lost in the mists of time, but his great work is thankfully still with us. Enjoy. John Haines
A Christmas Carol
It gives me great pleasure to be able to offer a new edition of an old classic by Charles Dickens. This is courtesy of the hard work done by so many in their research into finding out which great works are now available for reprinting. There's not too much that can be said here about the story. Or is there? For Dickens' enthusiasts and those just getting into this great man's work, this represents the rare humour of the early Dickens, rather than the more sombreful musing of his later work. Also, to those who have not read the story, well, I'm sure you've all seen the films. Different, aren't they? But which one is most accurate? There's only one way to find out! Happy reading.
Memoirs of Joseph Grimaldi, Edited by Charles Dickens ( Boz ). A scanned copy of an 1854 edition
( Facsimile of 1854 Edition - Scanned. )In 1837, Charles Dickens was asked to 'tidy up' the autobiography of Victorian Clown and Pantomime artist, Joseph Grimaldi. It merits inclusion in his collection, because he did indeed re-draft the words, with some of the text pure Dickens. This has been scanned from an 1854 edition, with odd lines of replacement text. There are also Victorian adverts from other editions throughout the book. Although the book is listed everywhere, with hard copies available, this is at a price, even for a badly torn and faded copy. Such is its desirability. But it is currently missing from most openly available download/EBook versions of 'Complete' or 'Collected Dickens'. This scanned copy will be a tremendous boon for all Dickens fans, and will be followed by a re-typed version in a few months. It is also a great read, especially for fans of Victorian Theatre. Enjoy. John Haines ( Please note. Considerable downloading time )
Mike Miller, Son of Pendragon
'Mike Miller, Son of Pendragon' is a tale of a young boy who inherits magical powers from Merlin the magician, and is a descendant of King Arthur. Hop aboard this roller-coaster of a ride around England, Romania and the world. Join Mike and his friends, in their battle against those still loyal to the evil ambitions of Sir Mordred, the dread enemy of King Arthur, and his goodly knights.
Memoirs of ( Joseph ) Grimaldi - Edited by Boz - with Notes and Additions by Charles Whitehead
This is Charles Dickens' biography of Late Georgian / Early Victorian Clown, Harlequin and Pantomime actor/artiste, Joseph Grimaldi. In addition to the scanned copy of the 1854 edition also available here, ( which has its own charm and has thus survived the chop ), this is a more downloadable-friendly 6 X 9 full-text facsimile( with illustrations )of the 1853 edition. So, a choice; if you wish to look at a scanned all-graphics 8.5X11 copy, ( a piece of history,) please do check out the 1854 version, but if it's simply a good read of the subject matter you are after, then this is more appropriate.
To the Power of Four - A collection of short stories, poetry and song
This is my collection of three of my short stories as well as my book of selected poems and song lyrics. These are 'The Old Man's Trousers', 'Backwater Blues', 'The Marble', and 'Haines, Rogan, Words... And a Little Music'. I have combined these as they are far better value together than just sold separately. Enjoy. John Haines
'The Pied Piper of Hamelin' Download Only of 1892 Facsimile Copy
This is the Download version only of this book. Please see listing for POD hard copy for further details.

Egart (Egg) has spent 30 years running from his past. When he was 15 years old, some extremely strange occurrences began to happen in his hometown. People began to suddenly drop dead. The only key to these mass murders was a man (or perhaps more aptly a horrible creature) who called himself Lucas Black. This dark man was out for blood and a high body count. However, once he realized Egart’s abilities, Black’s efforts focused on getting rid of Egart.

(Paper Back Cover) Captain Otway Burns and his ship Snap Dragon explores the legends, facts, and misguided information of Captain Otway Burns’ life. As a native son of southeastern North Carolina he was a merchant sea Captain, highly successful War of 1812 Privateer, noted businessman, and an inventive ship builder. Later in life Burns was a strong state legislator, but like most of his life, his service to his state and country was controversial. Myth and fact have merged since Captain Burns’ death in 1850. Using fragments of information along with long forgotten documents, compiled with material gained from newly located direct descendents, this book attempts to capture a more accurate description of Captain Burns and his adventurous life. If you enjoy good stories of Tall Ship Naval battles, or are intrigued with local legends, this book is for you.
